Wrapping up the 9th HAEE Energy Transition Symposium on May 22-24, 2024 at Maroussi Plaza Centre

Dear HAEE Members and Friends,

The 9th HAEE Energy Transition Symposium entitled "Striving for Stability in a Highly Uncertain Energy World", hosted by the Hellenic Association for Energy Economics, wrapped up its dynamic sessions from May 22-24, 2024, at Maroussi Plaza Centre, in Athens.

The conference served as a hub for insightful discussions, centered on the evolving landscape of the energy sector amidst an increasingly complex geopolitical scenery. Maintaining its hallmark blend of international, specialized, and academic rigor, the Symposium delivered comprehensive analyses on a broad spectrum of energy topics.

Attendees benefited from a rich program designed to educate and inspire, reaffirming the Symposium's reputation as a premier platform for exploring the future of energy.

The conference focused on critical issues of the energy sector including the regulatory frameworks for a sustainable energy strategy, developments in Renewable Energy Sources, offshore wind energy, green and sustainable investments in Greece and the European Union, climate resilience, geopolitical dimensions, and energy security in the context of the energy strategy, recent developments in the natural gas and LNG sector, as well as the development of interconnections. Last but not least, major focus was given to sessions regarding the decarbonization of the Greek Islands and the green transition of the industry.

With the aim of highlighting the role of innovation in the field of energy, four important side events were held during the conference – the IANOS and CHESS workshops, the Academic Paper Sessions and for the first time this year, the Innovation Energy Day, providing a platform to start-up companies, spin-offs, innovation hubs and distinguished academics to share their research findings and propel the energy community forward.

The key outline of the Symposium is that the energy market needs to acquire a new structure, in which energy storage, networks and new interconnections will play a key role. It is a necessity to strengthen the energy security of the country, contribute to the smooth integration of the ever-increasing RES and help balance the supply and demand curve.

Among the biggest highlights of the Symposium was the award ceremony, during which, Dr. Yannis Stournaras, Governor of the Bank of Greece, was recognized for his long-standing contribution to economic policymaking towards a low-carbon economy and climate change mitigation.

We are now looking forward to next year’s Symposium, which will take place in May 2025. Please check for updates as the exact dates will be announced soon.
