Editorial: New energy technologies on the move
Research and development on existing technologies such as PV continues, while the sector admits that their efficiency is reaching a certain plateau.
It is very positive that efficiency levels claimed so far are enough to drive their cost lower than fossil fuels in order to be competitive in the market.
At the same time, there are many discussions about the entrance of new energy technologies, such as energy storage with batteries, innovative grids, hydrogen, demand management etc.
It is very encouraging that these discussions take place not just abroad, but also in the Greek market, judging by latest developments. For example, DESFA emphasizes the use of hydrogen in order to make natural gas “greener” and keep its role relevant in the years to come. The regulator also sends the message to market players that they must keep pace with developments in hydrogen and storage, while its new regulatory framework in storage is expected shortly.
Another example is Mytilineos Group, whose interest in blockchain as part of a deal in the Australian market highlights the group's technological reflexes.
Last but not least, there is documented investing interest for floating wind turbines in order for Greece to advance its marine energy use. This is also a sector that makes its first steps and gradually matures.
PPC Renewables consortium for offshore wind farm projects
PPC Renewables, a subsidiary of power utility PPC, plans to establish a consortium for offshore wind farm investments and is preparing, for this year, a tender for RES projects totaling 100 MW, the subsidiary’s chief executive Konstantinos Mavros declared.
The company head’s update comes as further proof of the power utility PPC group’s intensifying effort for a leading role in the green energy sector.
Offshore wind farm projects demand major investment synergies and “we will seek to establish a consortium” for this purpose, the PPC Renewables chief told the first of the two conferences.
HEDNO investments up 17% in 2020, binding offers for 49% in 3Q
Distribution network operator DEDDIE/HEDNO has reversed its trend of declining investments in recent years, increasing investments to a level of 175 million euros in 2020, a 17 percent increase compared to a year earlier, parent company PPC informed analysts yesterday during a virtual-conference presentation of the group’s 2020 results.
Part of these investments concerned the network’s expansion, whose total length increased by 808 km for medium-voltage networks and 661 km for low-voltage networks. Also, a further 538 low and medium-voltage transformers were installed.
As a result, the medium-voltage network’s length totaled 113,358 km at the end of 2020, the low-voltage network’s length totaled 128,211 km, while the network’s total number of installed transformers reached 165,290.
The network’s active users totaled 7,593,412 at the end of 2020, 12,668 of these in the medium-voltage category.
PPC posts profits for 2020 despite lower revenues
PPC’s group net profit for 2020 totalled EUR 35.2 million, against a loss of EUR 1.69 billion a year before. Revenues slipped by 5.7%, coming at EUR 4.65 billion.
PPC Renewables SA, the green energy arm PPC, saw its 2020 net profit contract by 43.4% on the year to EUR 4.3 million (USD 5.2m), even as revenues increased.
DESFA’s Results on Natural Gas Consumption in the first quarter of 2021
The increasing trend in gas consumption in Greece continues, according to DESFA’s data for the first quarter of 2021, with the new entry point in Nea Messimvria contributing significantly to gas inflow in the NNGS, following its interconnection with TAP at the beginning of the year.
According to DESFA data for the period January - March 2021, domestic gas consumption increased by 4.56%, reaching 17.64 Terawatt hours (TWh), from 16.87 TWh in the corresponding period last year.
Gas imports amounted to 19.16 TWh, showing a decrease from 19.82 TWh in the first quarter of 2020. The largest quantities entered from the entry point of Sidirokastro (8.9 TWh), which covered 46.57% of imports, recording a significant increase compared to the first quarter of 2020. It was followed by the LNG Terminal of Revithoussa (Agia Triada entry point), which covered 30.37% of imports (5.82 TWh).
In the third place was for the first time the new entry point in Nea Messimvria, which, following the interconnection with TAP, covered 18.12% of imports within its first quarter of operation, with more than 3.47 TWh, while finally, more than 0.94 TWh (4.94%) were imported in the NNGS from the interconnection point in Kipoi, Evros.
Regarding the categories of gas consumers, the highest consumption is steadily recorded by electricity producers with 9.31 TWh, covering 52.78% of demand. The consumption of households and businesses through distribution networks is also increased compared to the first quarter of 2020, with 5.44 TWh, which corresponds to approximately 31% of demand. Domestic industries and CNG recorded a consumption of 2.89 TWh, covering 16.39% of demand.
Beyond domestic consumption, 7.76% of total demand for the first quarter of this year was related to natural gas exports to Bulgaria from the Sidirokastro interconnection point. More specifically, exports to Bulgaria amounted to about 1.48 TWh, a quantity significantly lower than that exported in the corresponding period of 2020, with the decrease being attributed to the return of prices for LNG to higher levels compared to the first quarter of last year.
As far as LNG imports are concerned, in the period January-March 2021, approximately 5.43 TWh from 9 vessels were unloaded at the Revithoussa LNG Terminal compared to about 10.78 TWh from 15 vessels in the corresponding period of the previous year. The decrease mainly concerns LNG cargos from the US and Qatar, while imports from Algeria increased significantly, with 2.47 TWh of LNG compared to about 0.98 TWh imported in the same period last year. An increase of 10.84% compared to the first quarter of last year was recorded for LNG imports from Egypt, which in the first quarter of this year reached 0.92 TWh. As a result, during the period January - March 2021, Algeria was the largest importer of LNG in Greece, covering 45% of total LNG imports. The USA followed with 21% of the total quantities imported, while Egypt and Qatar recorded a share of 17% each.
DESFA’s infrastructure continues to contribute substantially to the diversification of gas supply sources and security of supply. Finally, the liberalization of the energy market and the Third-Party Access TPA, under which DESFA operates, strengthens price competition. Third-party access (TPA) is governed by the provisions of European Union and national law, ensuring open access to any interested party.
The interconnection point with TAP in Nea Mesimvria was put into commercial operation on 31/12/2020
Ptolemaida 5 lignite plant to be converted to natural gas and hydrogen

Regarding the unprecedented extreme weather conditions of February 2021 in the State of Texas, US, and concerning their impact on the Group’s business activities, the Management of the Group moved quickly and took all the required actions from the first moments of this natural phenomenon. Throughout the period, meaning from the natural phenomenon that occurred and until the date of approval of the attached financial statements, there are daily discussions carried on with increased intensity with all stakeholders (Hedge Providers, Tax Equity Investors and Lender among others) in order to minimize the adverse effects on the Group. While these discussions are ongoing, the Management is considering the following three possible actions: (a) bringing an action before the competent courts and entering into a legal dispute with the Hedge Providers over “Liquidated Damages invoices”, which cover the period from 13 to 19 February 2021, the total amount of which reached to $179 million, (b) finding a mutually acceptable commercial solution to the dispute with the Hedge Providers, and (c) a Class B interests-based divestment, which would lead to the recognition of an accounting loss in the consolidated financial results that is estimated at approximately $115 million. The Management, at the date of approval of the attached financial statements, is in consultation with the Group’s legal advisors in order to minimize the adverse effects on the Group and at this point no final decisions have been taken.
Despite the deterioration of the global economic conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, TERNA ENERGY Group maintains its financial robustness, having managed to ensure the health and safety of its employees.
