Editorial: A summer of "hot" energy prices globally
The disruption of the global economy last year and in 2021 as a result of the pandemic has led to significant rises in a series of materials and commodities.
It is very telling that oil now trades well above 70 dollars, while natural gas in Europe is at a multi year seasonal high not seen since 2008. This has repercussions for power production, since the high CO2 cost together with the high fuel cost recently led to expensive MWh prices.
A similar picture exists in LNG, where the JKM contract traded at its highest seasonal level since 2014 at 12 dollars. At the same time, the Newcastle contract for coal surpassed 130 dollars.
The effects are also felt in photovoltaics, where the cost is rising for the first time in years through the lack of materials and expensive freight from China.
These trends make an appearance in the Greek market as well and there is skepticism on behalf of the consumers as a result of the wholesale power price surpassing 120 euros among the still fresh target model markets.
Nonetheless, it is interesting to see how the market behaves under high demand and a heat wave, in order to draw necessary conclusions for its best performance in the future.
Sunlight presents positive Q1 results and goals for new products
SUNLIGHT, a member of Olympia Group, posted a strong financial performance along the unprecedented recession cycle of year 2020, demonstrating that the strategic repositioning of the company creates new very promising prospects. SUNLIGHT has continued the digitization of its production process (Industry 4.0) and further implemented its investment initiatives, confirming its position as one of the largest energy storage application companies in the world that contributes to the transition of Greece and Europe into the era of electric mobility and green energy. The Company created a new research center for the development of technologically advanced solutions based on lithium, established the subsidiary SUNLIGHT BATTERIES USA Inc. and further strengthened its presence in the Italian and European markets.
The company’s financial results for the year 2020 were affected by COVID-19 pandemic, but at the same time marked a strong positive performance. Turnover amounted to €176.9 million for 2020 compared to €180.2 million in 2019, recording a marginal drop of 1.8%. It is worth noting that if metal prices remained at the same levels as in year 2019, turnover would have increased by 5%. Profit before taxes amounted to €18.3 million compared to €11.7 million in the previous year, posting a significant increase of 56.4%, with SUNLIGHT being the only company in its industry globally that posted an increase in sales volume, as well as an increase in profit within the pandemic.
Crete-Peloponnese interconnection to begin commercial operation
During this summer, the power interconnection of Crete-Peloponnese will begin the transfer of the first loads to the island, according to ADMIE. The project was completed in May and its commercial operation is expected shortly.
It should be noted that ADMIE's earnings reached 8.2 million Euros in Q1 with income at 67.8 million, 3.5% lower than a year ago.
Ten Cyclades islands to be connected to the main continental grid
Ten more islands of the Cyclades are about to be interconnected through ADMIE's projects. The last phase of the Cyclades interconnection will commence shortly and is expected to be completed by 2024, thus connecting Santorini, Folegandros, Milow and Serifos to the continental system. At the same time, Anafi, Kimolos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Kythnos and Thirasia will also enjoy the benefits.
Right now, the tender for the first project, the undersea connection of Santorini and Naxos is being carried out with a budget of 126 million Euros. In autumn, the tenders for the rest of the islands will follow. The total budget of this grand project is placed at 408 million Euros and the investment is part of the recovery package, recently approved by the EU.
Four growth pylons for Motor Oil's greener future
Greek refiner, Motor Oil, answers the call for a more reliable and sustainable growth strategy through the use of renewables, digitization and ESG principles.
As CEO, Petros Janetakis, recently mentioned during the group's general assembly, Motor Oil's strategy has three goals, namely to remain a leader in the energy sector, to drive the energy transition and to achieve these goals in a responsible and sustainable way.
The group's priorities focus on four pillars:
MYTILINEOS partners with CIP for the development of offshore wind
MYTILINEOS through its Power & Gas Business Unit - Protergia has signed an agreement with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), on behalf of its fund CI New Markets Fund I, for a joint cooperation (CIP 60% / MYTILINEOS 40%) in the development of offshore wind parks in sea areas of Greece.
Both Companies will contribute to this cooperation, in order to identify appropriate sites and co-develop and co-invest in offshore wind projects, by combining resources and expertise.
CIP is a fund management company specialized in energy infrastructure investments globally, in particular within renewables and the greenfield segment. CIP has approximately EUR 15 billion under management and is the largest dedicated greenfield renewable energy fund globally. CIP’s total portfolio of renewables investments is estimated to reduce the equivalent of approximately 10-11 million tonnes of CO2 and sustainably power approximately 5-6 million households each year in the countries where the funds invest.
The principal developer for all the projects to be developed under the CIP-MITILINEOS cooperation is Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP), a world leading offshore wind project development, construction and operations company. In collaboration with CIP, COP transfers extensive know-how that boosts the partnership in the increasing competitive offshore wind industry. COP works closely with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and since 2015 has been leading the development of numerous offshore wind projects in Germany, UK, Taiwan, USA, Australia, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and elsewhere.
General Manager of the Power & Gas Business Unit Mr. Dinos Benroubi has stated after the signing of the agreement: “We are proud to collaborate with world leaders in offshore wind projects and we are looking forward to a fruitful cooperation that will enhance both the energy strategy of MYTILINEOS and Greece’s energy transition.”
CIP Partner Michael Hannibal said: “CIP is pleased to join forces with MYTILINEOS exploring a new offshore wind market. It will be a floating offshore wind dominated market, and we look forward to bring our global experience and working with MYTILINEOS and local partners to develop good projects in Greece.”
Offshore wind is expected to be the largest source of electricity in the European Union by 2040. In order for Greece to achieve its national targets, there is an obvious need for a timely and effective legal and regulatory framework.
MYTILINEOS’ Power & Gas Business Unit aspires to become a catalyst for a low-emission Greek electricity generation mix, by investing in clean energy and innovative applications for a greener future for all. Recently, the Company announced the acquisition of a 1.48GW solar portfolio, and a pipeline of storage projects.
The first days of this summer were... green. EcoFest 2021 took place on 4, 5 and 6 June at Plateia Nerou in Kallithea showcasing a more sustainable lifestyle. The Hellenic Association for Energy Economy (HAEE), the Region of Attica, and the Development Organization of the Region of Attica, Nea Mitropoliti Attiki, invited all citizens to adopt more environment friendly practices and they responded positively.
For three consecutive days, Plateia Nerou became a destination with original activities, workshops, games, music and many surprises for young and old alike, bringing forward environmental awareness, information and education as the common denominator. We all became Ecoists and lived the most exciting green experience, entering the world of EcoLiving, EcoMobility, EcoCooking, EcoFashion, EcoFun, Recycling and EcoStories.

The Hellenic Association for Energy Economics is organising the 6th Energy Transition Symposium “Looking Ahead with Optimism, Beyond the Covid Era”, from Tuesday, 28 September to Friday, 1 October 2021, at Theoxenia Palace Hotel, in Kifissia, Athens. The Symposium’s plenary sessions are scheduled to take place in physical form and will be live-streamed.
Considering the extraordinary circumstances of 2020, the 6th Symposium will inevitably focus on the turbulences caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and its prints on the global energy system. Despite the sharp decrease in global emissions last year, due to the recession of economic activities, enormous efforts are still required to reach the ambitious target of a net zero carbon economy. Governments need to take decisive actions and implement structural measures to accelerate the clean energy transition and pave the way towards a sustainable recovery. On top of that, renewable energy solutions can play a key role, providing a fast response to the pandemic and building more resilient energy systems. These issues, among many others, will be addressed in detail during the Symposium’s sessions.
In this framework, we welcome the submission of academic papers to be presented during our Symposium’s concurrent sessions that will take place digitally.
Visit HAEE’s website for upcoming announcements regarding the draft agenda, thematic sessions, and confirmed speakers.
