Since the beginning of RU – UA war, the EU has suffered the consequences of this unprecedented geopolitical tension in the continent and came up against a great threat to its energy security, since both the European energy systems and the economies over-relied on Russian natural gas. In response to Russian aggression, European Commission came up with REPowerEU, a joint European action for ensuring affordable, secure and sustainable energy for its Member States and their citizens. However, ending the EU’s energy dependency on Russia is a time-consuming procedure, which requires strategic planning, joint actions to diversify energy sources, immediate response and identification of any transformational opportunities. Driven by the facts and our intention to apply rigorous analysis to the most pertinent topics of energy economics, the HAEE team is launching "In Focus", a new online publication, dedicated to contribute to knowledge advancement in different thematic areas. The first issue entitled "The European Energy Security in the spotlight" adumbrates the reasons that led to the EU’s dependency on Russian natural gas, delves into the implications of the Russia-Ukraine war in Europe, examines the possible challenges and limitations that the REPowerEU plan may entail and highlights the possible opportunities for Greece to overcome the energy crisis and be transformed into a regional energy hub. We are particularly grateful to our Members who provided their valuable insights, thus highly contributing to the completion of this report. To find out more, download the full study here.
