The latest edition of HAEE’s Chart of the Month explores the critical issue of curtailments in renewable energy (RES) across the EU and the urgent need for storage solutions. From January to October 2024, curtailed energy primarily occurred during peak Solar PV hours and warmer months, highlighting the misalignment between production and demand.

This analysis sheds light on the relationship between curtailments and wholesale electricity prices, which ranged from 12 €/MWh in Sweden to 145 €/MWh in Italy, emphasizing the need for enhanced grid flexibility and storage capacity.

This chart underscores the significance of storage technologies in maximizing RES efficiency, minimizing waste, and ensuring a resilient energy transition. As Europe moves toward decarbonization, addressing curtailments is essential to unlocking the full potential of renewables.
